Faylene Tunui is the first Ngāti Tūwharetoa, tangata whenua mayor of Kawerau.

Since her election to council in 2013, she has been a dedicated servant of her community, evolving from councillor to deputy mayor and now kahika mayor.

The foundations of her career come from the marae where she learned to serve and contribute for the collective benefit of all.  The self-proclaimed” Head of the Complaints Department of Council”, specialising in conflict resolution, Faylene is passionate about exploring local opportunities and finding local solutions to address local challenges – from home, for home.
