Sam Broughton is the president of LGNZ and the mayor of Selwyn District Council, New Zealand's fastest-growing area.

As a third term Mayor and two prior terms as a Councillor, Sam brings a wealth of local government experience to his role. He is a values-based leader and clear communicator, dedicated to amplifying the voice and power of local government. In his first year of Presidency, Sam visited almost every council across the country to get a strong understanding of their individual challenges – using this to inform his leadership and advocacy.

Echoing many councils' calls, Sam is adamant local government needs more sustainable funding, greater collaboration between central and local government on major issues and increased local decision-making power to better deliver our communities' needs and wants. Local government is facing many challenges, and it's Sam's belief that the strength to tackle these will come from councils facing into these issues together.
